The incident below occurred in 1906. While these are not direct kin, they are distant cousins (4th cousins, 4x removed from me), and it is an interesting story! James Roach Pauley was born on 6 November 1869 in Bland County, Virginia, and died there on 4 May 1934. His brother, Newton Thomas Pauley, was born on 20 December 1867 in Bland County and died on 17 March 1927, possibly in Charlottesville, Virginia. Roach is a family name; there is a Pauley-Roach cemetery in Bland County.
BATTLE AT LITTLE CREEK
Pauley and Hancock Families Meet in Deadly Combat
(Special to The American)
Roanoke, VA., July 14 – At Little Creek, an isolated spot in Bland County, last night Newton Pauley and Roach Pauley, two brothers, and Arrisia Thompson, on one side, and George Hancock and two of his sons on the other, engaged in a battle with guns and pistols, during which Geo. Hancock was dangerously wounded in the chest by shots alleged to have been fired by the opposing party, and both of Hancock’s sons were wounded.
The Pauley and Hancock families have had a feud of long standing. Both families are well known in that section. The Pauleys were arrested today and carried to jail at Bland Courthouse, and a telegram tonight says further trouble is feared. No one on the Pauley side was injured, but a horse was shot from under Thompson.
